Born and raised in Lebanon, Fadia Haddad attended the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts and went on to obtain a diploma from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1988. She still lives and works in the French capital.
Haddad re-transcribes life in her own language. She often paints masks, at once evocative of flowers, female genitals and birds. Using acrylic paint, she creates carefully designed yet powerfully expressive compositions based on simple geometric shapes. Haddad’s painting is a witness to both the happiness and disenchantment of our times, expressed through screams and silence – the darker, earthy and ashy tones that simultaneously clash with and complement delicate bright colours.
Haddad has been featured in solo and group shows in Lebanon, the United States and France. She notably participated in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and in exhibitions at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. She has also exhibited in contemporary art fairs such as Art Paris and Art Brussels, and Christie’s sold her paintings at auction in Dubai in 2006.
