Lebanese artist Jean-Pierre Watchi was born in Bamako (Mali) and currently lives and works in France. He studied in Beirut, and later at the London Film School (from which he graduated in 1975) and at the l’Ecole de l’Image des Gobelins in Paris, where he took classes in digital imaging.
Watchi started exhibiting art in the seventies, exploring a variety of media. He was invited to the XIV° International Biennial of Sao-Paulo in 1977 where he presented a project for an audio visual wall, participated to his first F.I.A.C in 1980 and had a solo show at the I.M.A. (Arab World Institute; Paris) in 1989.
For the past ten years, he has been focusing on creating digital art works that combine photography, video and digital animations. The latter often involve music and background noise and are infused with bright, candy-like, colours reminiscent of blooming flowers.
Watchi’s videos were shown at the FIAC (Paris, 2005), at the Katzen Museum in Washington D.C. in 2010, and at Sunday’s Screening #6 (Paris, 2011).
