Exhibits at Beirut Exhibition Center

Born in Lebanon, Marwan Sahmarani studied at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art Graphique Penninghen in Paris, and earned his diploma in 1989. He later settled in Montreal and recently moved back to Beirut.

Sahmarani’s work criticizes socio-political problems, especially those that plague the Middle East. His painting, drawing, sculpture and performance are indeed closely linked to his Middle Eastern origins. The tortured faces and bodies, in dense compositions, indeed bring to mind contemporary conflicts as well as the history of the region. In his figurative, almost phantasmagorical art, Sahmarani depicts and criticizes the cyclical patterns of violent history in the Middle East, going back to the Middle Ages, to remind and warn the viewer that history unfortunately self-perpetuates in this region.

Sahmarani has exhibited in solo in Lebanon, England, Ireland and Dubai since 1997. He has taken part in collective exhibitions in Washington D.C., Dubai, Mexico City, Montreal and Paris. In 2010, he was awarded the Abraaj Capital Prize in Dubai for his work The Feast of the Damned. His work was also sold at auction by Sotheby’s in 2008 and 2009 in London.
