Sculptor and painter Simone Fattal was born in Damascus and studied philosophy in Beirut and at the Sorbonne in Paris. In the seventies, she was based and exhibited in Beirut, before establishing herself in California in 1980. There, she founded a publishing house dedicated to avant-garde writing, the Post-Apollo Press. Towards the end of the eighties, she began sculpting men and women in burnt clay and started working with ceramics, a technique she practiced at the Art Institute of San Francisco, Ca. With their powerful yet unstable bodies, and their stylized heads and gigantic legs, Fattal’s sculptures of men and women bring to mind mythical Sumerian or Assyrian characters.
Fattal’s works have been shown in Lebanon, the United States, and France since 2000, and in collective exhibitions and fairs across America, Europe and the Middle East (such as the Cairo Biennale in 2000, Art Paris Abu Dhabi in 2008 and the Sharjah Biennial in 2011). Between 2006 and 2008, she worked with the ceramic artist Hans Spinner in Grasse, France.
